Why & How To Change Your Skincare Routine When You're Sick

Why & How To Change Your Skincare Routine When You're Sick

When the seasons change, so do our skincare needs. For women dealing with acne, this transition can be particularly challenging, especially when you're also battling a cold or the flu. Feeling unwell can disrupt your daily routine and leave your skin in distress. That’s why it's important to adapt your skincare regimen during these times.

First and foremost, hydration is key. When you're sick, your body needs extra fluids to fight off illness and recover effectively. Ensure you’re drinking plenty of water to keep both your body and skin hydrated. Dehydration can worsen acne by leading to increased oil production as the skin tries to compensate for the loss of moisture.

Next, consider simplifying your skincare routine. When you're under the weather, you might not have the energy or motivation for a lengthy regimen filled with multiple products. Stick to basics: cleanse, treat, moisturize, and protect. Use a gentle cleanser that won't irritate your skin further; harsh exfoliants should be avoided as they can exacerbate inflammation.

If you usually use active ingredients like salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide in your acne treatment routine, you may want to scale back during illness. These ingredients can sometimes lead to dryness or irritation when combined with other stressors such as fever or congestion-related sweating. Instead, opt for soothing products that contain ingredients like aloe vera or chamomile which will help calm inflamed skin.

Your moisturizer is crucial during this time; choose one that is lightweight yet hydrating enough for sensitive skin types prone to breakouts. Look for non-comedogenic formulas that won’t clog pores while still providing essential moisture.

Lastly, don’t forget about sun protection! Even if you're not feeling well enough to go outside much during cold and flu season, UV rays can still penetrate through windows and affect your skin's health. A broad-spectrum sunscreen will safeguard against damage from these rays while allowing your skin a chance to heal.

In conclusion, adapting your skincare routine during seasonal changes while also managing cold or flu symptoms doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Focus on hydration, simplify routines where possible, scale back on harsh treatments if necessary—this way you'll give both yourself and your complexion the care needed in times of sickness!
