If you've ever stood in the skincare aisle trying to decode the promises on every bottle—or watched influencers rave about “miracle” routines—you know how confusing skincare can be when you’re struggling with acne.

So what is the best acne skincare routine?

The truth is: the best skincare routine is the one that’s customized to you.

Not your friend. Not a TikTok trend. Not even a top-selling product.

Here’s why a one-size-fits-all approach often doesn’t work—and what actually matters when it comes to building a skincare routine that supports clear, healthy skin.

Your skin is a living, breathing organ that responds to its environment—and that environment looks different for every person.

When I build skincare routines for patients inside the Breakthrough Acne Program, I look at more than just acne. Here are a few of the key skin characteristics I take into consideration:

Skin tone and colour (which can affect post-acne hyperpigmentation and sensitivity to certain actives)
Skin texture (is it dry and flaky, or oily and bumpy?)
Skin barrier integrity (is there redness, tightness, or stinging?)
Presence of other skin conditions like eczema, rosacea, or perioral dermatitis
Age-related concerns like wrinkles or sun damage
Past product use (especially if there’s a history of over-exfoliation or irritation)

All of these influence which ingredients will be most effective—and most gentle—for your skin.

If you're not sure which ingredients to look for (or avoid) when shopping for acne-prone skin, my free guide can help.

Inside the guide, you’ll learn:

Which active ingredients actually work for acne
What to avoid if your skin is sensitive or inflamed
The difference between comedolytic, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial ingredients
A simple framework for building your skincare routine around active ingredients, without wasting money on trends

This guide is a great first step if you’re looking for clarity, confidence, and a routine that actually helps your skin heal.

While skincare is important, it's only one piece of the acne puzzle.

In my Breakthrough Acne Program, we go beyond products to address the internal root causes of your breakouts—like inflammation, hormones, stress, and digestion.

Your personalized skincare routine is built into the program, but we also:

Run lab tests to identify hidden imbalances
Create a nutrition and lifestyle plan that supports skin health from within
Track progress and tweak your routine as your skin changes

Because clear skin isn’t just about what you put on it—it’s about healing what’s happening underneath it too.
