Sunburn, Sweat, and Skin: Summer Skincare for Acne-Prone Faces

Read Tasha's Story
Tasha loved being outside in the summer. But her skin didn’t love it back.
- Sunburned cheeks
- Breakouts after sunscreen
- New clogged pores from sweating at the gym
- And a weird myth that “the sun dries up acne,” which she desperately wanted to believe
She needed a summer routine that wouldn’t set her skin back.

What Summer Does to Acne-Prone Skin
Summer skincare is tricky because:
- Sweat + sunscreen can clog pores
- UV exposure can increase inflammation and worsen post-acne pigmentation
- Dehydration dries the skin, causing oil glands to overcompensate
Summer Skincare Tips That Actually Work
1. Pick the Right SPF
When it's sunny, always use a sunscreen that won't clog your pores. Look for labels like "non-comedogenic" or "for acne-prone skin." Mineral sunscreens, especially those with zinc, are usually best because they sit on top of your skin and don't soak in. This keeps your skin protected without causing new breakouts.
2. Drink Up and Moisturize
Keeping your skin hydrated is super important. Drinking water every day helps your body clean itself from the inside. Also, use a light hydrating serum, like one with hyaluronic acid. This adds moisture to your skin without making it feel greasy, which can actually help prevent too much oil.
3. Rinse After Sweating
Sweat mixed with dirt and oil is a perfect recipe for acne. So, after you work out, play sports, or spend a lot of time in the heat, rinse your face (and body if needed) right away. A quick rinse can stop sweat from clogging your pores and causing pimples.
4. Wear a Hat
A simple way to protect your skin is to wear a wide-brimmed hat when you're outside. Less sun on your face means less redness and swelling, which can lead to fewer pimples. A hat acts like a shield, giving your skin extra protection from harmful sun rays.
5. Skip the Tanning
It might seem like the sun helps dry out pimples, but that's just a trick. Don't try to tan to clear your skin. Tanning damages your skin, and while it might look better for a day, it usually leads to more breakouts later. Plus, sun damage makes dark spots and scars from acne much worse and harder to get rid of.
