How to Balance Hormones for Acne: A Holistic Guide to Clearer Skin

When Leah (fictional name to protect patient confidentiality) first came to see me, she was frustrated — and honestly, exhausted.
At 26, she’d tried every over-the-counter acne product she could find, been prescribed antibiotics twice, and even went on the birth control pill at one point. Nothing worked long-term. The breakouts always came back — especially around her chin and jawline, flaring like clockwork before her period.
She was doing all the “right” things: drinking green smoothies, taking zinc, exercising regularly. But her skin? Still inflamed. Still unpredictable. Still taking a toll on her confidence.
What stood out to me most wasn’t the acne itself — it was the pattern.
As we started digging deeper, it became clear: her hormones were at the root of it all.
Leah’s story isn’t unique. In fact, hormonal imbalances are one of the most common underlying causes of acne I see in my practice. If your breakouts tend to pop up around your menstrual cycle, focus on the lower half of your face, or don’t respond to conventional treatments — your hormones may be the missing piece.
Let’s break down what’s really going on — and how to start balancing your hormones naturally.
What Causes Hormonal Acne?
Hormonal acne is driven by fluctuations or imbalances in key hormones like:
- Androgens (like testosterone and DHEA): These can increase oil production and clog pores.
- Estrogen & Progesterone: When these are out of sync, breakouts can flare before your period.
- Cortisol: Chronic stress and poor sleep can spike this hormone and worsen inflammation.
- Insulin: Blood sugar imbalances can drive up androgen levels.
Contrary to popular belief, it’s not just about having “too much testosterone.” It’s about how your entire hormonal system works together — and what underlying patterns are driving the imbalance.

How to Balance Hormones Naturally (Without Birth Control)
Birth control and Accutane are often offered as quick fixes — but they don’t address the root cause. Here’s what I recommend instead:
1. Track Your Cycle (Even If It's Irregular)
Get to know your cycle — this is your monthly hormonal report card. Pay attention to:
- When breakouts happen (before ovulation? Before your period?)
- PMS symptoms (bloating, mood swings, breast tenderness)
- Cycle length and flow
🧠 This helps identify which hormonal pattern may be at play and gives me invaluable information about your skin and menstrual cycle. There are many free and paid apps you can download to start tracking your cycle. My favourite is Flo (available for both android and apple).
2. Support Blood Sugar Balance Daily
Blood sugar spikes can lead to a domino effect: high insulin → increased testosterone → more acne.
Try this:
- Eat protein, fat, and fiber at every meal
- Don’t skip meals
- Add cinnamon to smoothies or oatmeal
- Move your body after meals — even a 10-minute walk helps

3. Minimize Xenoestrogens and Endocrine Disruptors
Xenoestrogens are chemicals that mimic estrogen in the body — and they can throw your hormones out of balance.
Common culprits:
- BPA is used in the production of many plastics, including food and beverage containers.
- Phthalates are used in cosmetics, shampoos, lotions, and deodorants to make products softer and have longer-lasting scents.
- Pesticides used in agriculture can contain xenoestrogens, which can then contaminate food sources.
What you can do:
- Use a glass or stainless steel water bottle
- Switch to non-toxic skincare (download my free guide on active ingredients if you're unsure where to start)
- Choose organic when possible — start with the Environmental Working Group's Dirty Dozen List
4. Prioritize Sleep & Stress Recovery
This one’s not sexy, but it’s everything. Chronic stress suppresses progesterone, disrupts ovulation, and increases cortisol — all acne triggers.
🛌 Aim for 7-9 hours of sleep.
🧘♀️ Find your go-to stress outlet: journaling, therapy, nature walks, yoga, etc.
Inside my Breakthrough Acne Program, we even use a Feel-Good Activities Checklist to make this part stick.
5. Get the Right Lab Work
The beauty of personalized testing is that it gives us a clear roadmap — for both of us.
- As your doctor, I can stop guessing and start targeting. I know exactly which systems need support, and I can adjust your treatment plan with precision.
- For you, the patient, lab results can be validating. They take the invisible — the fatigue, the breakouts, the bloating — and make it visible. You no longer feel like you're imagining things or overreacting.
It also means we can track progress over time. When your symptoms start to shift, we can often see those changes reflected in your lab markers too.

Real Talk: It's Not Just Hormones
Yes, hormonal imbalances matter. But so do your gut, liver, skin barrier, and inflammation levels. In my signature program, we go through each phase, layer by layer — because nothing in the body works in isolation.
