Every month, Jasmine could predict her breakouts better than her period. Chin, jawline, sometimes even her neck—like clockwork. She was told it was just part of being a woman. But she wanted to know why.

The short answer? Hormones.

If you've ever looked in the mirror a week before your period and wondered why you have new breakouts on your chin or jawline, you're not imagining things. Acne that flares up around menstruation is incredibly common, and it's a direct result of the hormonal shifts happening in your body.

Understanding the "why" behind these breakouts is the first step toward finding a solution. Let's break down how your menstrual cycle affects your skin and what you can do to take back control.

Your menstrual cycle is regulated by a complex interplay of hormones, primarily estrogen, progesterone, and a small amount of testosterone (an androgen). These hormones fluctuate throughout the month, and each phase of the cycle brings a different effect on your skin.

Follicular Phase (Days 1-14): Your period starts, and then your body begins to produce more estrogen. Estrogen is great for your skin! It helps keep skin plump, hydrated, and can even boost collagen production. As your estrogen levels rise, your skin is often at its clearest and most radiant.
Ovulation (Around Day 14): Estrogen peaks, and you're at your "glowy" best. However, as you approach the second half of your cycle, you'll start to see a significant drop in estrogen and a surge in progesterone.
Luteal Phase (Days 14-28): This is the prime time for hormonal acne. As progesterone levels rise, they can stimulate your sebaceous glands to produce more sebum—the oily substance that lubricates your skin. This, combined with the relative drop in estrogen, can lead to:

Increased Oiliness: Your skin can become slick, leading to clogged pores.
Pore Swelling: Progesterone can also cause the skin to swell, compressing the pores and trapping oil and dead skin cells inside.
Inflammation: The bacteria that cause acne, C. acnes, thrive on this excess sebum, leading to painful, inflamed breakouts, often in the form of deep cysts or nodules on your chin, jawline, and neck.

While all acne is technically influenced by hormones, hormonal acne has some distinct characteristics:

Location, Location, Location: Breakouts often appear on the lower third of your face, including your chin, jawline, and around your mouth.
Timing is Key: The flare-ups are often cyclical, appearing consistently about a week before your period starts and subsiding once your period begins or ends.
Deep & Painful: Hormonal acne tends to be cystic, meaning the pimples are deeper under the skin, tender to the touch, and often don't come to a head.

Lifestyle & Holistic Approaches:

While these won't "cure" hormonal acne, they can help support your body and minimize flare-ups.

Manage Stress: High cortisol (the stress hormone) can throw off your other hormones, leading to more breakouts. Find healthy ways to manage stress, such as exercise, meditation, or spending time in nature.
Balanced Diet: Some studies suggest that diets high in refined sugars and dairy may worsen acne in some people. Focus on a whole-food diet rich in anti-inflammatory foods like leafy greens, healthy fats, and lean proteins.
Prioritize Sleep: Lack of sleep increases cortisol and inflammation, both of which are bad news for your skin. Aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night.
