Many people think digestion begins and ends with bloating, stomach pain, or how often they go to the bathroom. But one of the most overlooked aspects of digestive health is how long food actually takes to move through your digestive tract.

In the Breakthrough Acne Program, gut health is the first area we address because digestion influences nutrient absorption, inflammation, hormone metabolism, and even skin health. One of the simplest ways we assess digestive function is through something called the Blue Muffin Challenge.

Despite its playful name, this test can provide valuable information about how efficiently your digestive system is working.

## What Is the Blue Muffin Challenge?

The Blue Muffin Challenge is a simple at-home experiment used to estimate bowel transit time—the amount of time it takes food to travel from your mouth to the toilet.

The test involves eating two muffins containing a significant amount of blue food colouring and then monitoring your bowel movements until the blue colour fully disappears.

The time between eating the muffin and seeing blue stool return back to brown provides an estimate of how quickly material is moving through your digestive tract.

No laboratory testing is required. No needles. No special equipment.

Just two blue muffins and a little patience.

## Why Does Bowel Transit Time Matter?

Many people assume that if they have a daily bowel movement, their digestion must be working perfectly.

Unfortunately, it's not always that simple . A person can have a bowel movement every day and still have sluggish transit. Others may have multiple bowel movements daily but experience rapid transit that doesn't allow adequate nutrient absorption. Transit time matters because it influences:

- Nutrient absorption
- Hormone metabolism
- Gut microbiome balance
- Inflammation levels
- Waste elimination

When transit time is too slow, waste products spend longer in contact with the intestinal lining. This may contribute to bloating, constipation, increased fermentation of food, and altered gut microbial activity. When transit time is too fast, nutrients may not have sufficient time to be absorbed properly. Both situations can impact overall health—and potentially skin health as well.

## What Does the Research Say?

Research suggests that bowel transit time is closely linked to the composition of the gut microbiome.

Individuals with slower transit times often demonstrate different microbial patterns compared to those with normal transit times. Transit time can influence bacterial diversity, fermentation processes, and the production of compounds that affect inflammation throughout the body.

Since acne is increasingly being studied through the lens of the gut-skin axis, understanding digestive function can provide important clues when investigating root causes.

The Blue Muffin Challenge is not a diagnostic tool, but it can serve as a useful screening method to identify whether bowel motility may deserve further attention.

## The Bottom Line

The Blue Muffin Challenge is an easy, inexpensive way to estimate bowel transit time and gain insight into digestive function.

While it won't diagnose digestive conditions, it can highlight whether food is moving through your system at an appropriate pace. Since digestion plays a critical role in inflammation, hormone metabolism, nutrient absorption, and skin health, understanding transit time can be an important piece of the puzzle.

If you've never measured your bowel transit time before, you may be surprised by what you discover.

And if your results seem outside the expected range, working with a naturopathic doctor (like myself!) can help determine what factors may be contributing and what steps make the most sense for your individual situation.
