## Hidden Sources of Inflammation That Could Be Sabotaging Your Skin

Katie thought she was doing everything right.

She had a gentle skincare routine, drank plenty of water, and stuck to a whole foods diet. She even cut back on dairy and sugar. But the breakouts kept coming. Her skin felt hot, red, and reactive—and she couldn’t figure out why.

If you relate to Katie's story, you’re not alone.

Many women I work with are health-conscious and committed to their skincare, but their acne persists because of one often-overlooked factor: chronic, low-grade inflammation.

Let’s talk about the hidden sources of inflammation that could be sabotaging your skin—and what you can do to start healing.

## Why Inflammation Matters in Acne

Inflammation is your body’s natural way of responding to injury or infection—but when it becomes chronic, it can disrupt every system in your body, including your skin.

In fact, research shows that acne is an inflammatory condition, even in its earliest stages. That means breakouts can be triggered or worsened by anything that keeps your inflammation levels elevated.

Some sources of inflammation are obvious (like an infection or injury), but others are much sneakier—and they can affect your skin without you realizing it.

## 5 Sneaky Sources of Inflammation That Can Trigger Breakouts

Blood Sugar Swings

Frequent spikes and crashes in blood sugar can lead to a surge in insulin and inflammatory hormones—both of which increase oil production and clog pores. This can happen even with "healthy" foods if they’re not balanced with protein and fiber.

Poor Sleep

Even just one night of poor sleep can increase inflammatory markers in the body. Over time, this can make your skin more reactive and slow down healing from breakouts.

Alcohol

Even occasional alcohol consumption can contribute to inflammation in the body. Alcohol increases oxidative stress, disrupts the gut barrier, and impairs liver detoxification—all of which can make your skin more prone to breakouts. It's also dehydrating and can spike blood sugar, adding even more fuel to the inflammatory fire.

Environmental Toxins

Exposure to pollution, plastics, fragrances, and pesticides can trigger immune responses that contribute to inflammation. Many of these are endocrine disruptors as well, which can further affect hormonal balance.

Hidden Gut Issues

Bloating, constipation, or the presence of dysbiotic bacteria in the gut can all drive inflammation under the surface. An imbalanced gut microbiome may also interfere with nutrient absorption, leaving your skin vulnerable.

## How to Calm Inflammation for Clearer Skin

You don’t need a perfect lifestyle—but small, consistent changes can go a long way :

- Build meals with protein, fiber, and healthy fats to keep blood sugar steady
- Prioritize deep, restful sleep
- Reduce or eliminate alcohol intake, especially during active flare-ups
- Minimize plastics, switch to fragrance-free products, and buy organic when possible
- Support your gut with fermented foods, regular bowel movements, and possibly targeted testing

## You Can’t Spot-Treat Systemic Inflammation

Topical products can help reduce surface redness, but they won’t resolve the deeper inflammatory patterns happening in your body. That’s why my [Breakthrough Acne Program](/breakthroughacneprogram) tackles inflammation in Phase 1 — where we identify and address the lifestyle and internal factors keeping your skin stuck.

We test, we track, and we rebuild your skin from the inside out.
